History of Titop Island in Ha Long Bay

Many visitors often wonder about the origin of the name “Titop” and who named the island. Previously, Titop Island was known as Nghia Dia Island or Hong Thap Tu Island. The name’s origin is linked to an event in 1905 when a French cargo ship, lacking a pilot, was wrecked on the reef in Con Coc Lagoon while entering Ha Long Bay. The bodies of the sailors were buried on the island, and it was named Titop in their memory by the locals. In maps of Ha Long Bay that were redrawn by French colonialists, the island was referred to as Cat Nang. On November 22, 1962, President Ho Chi Minh and Soviet astronaut Gherman Titop visited the island, and to commemorate this event, President Ho named the island Titop.
