A Journey Through Time: The 42-Year History of Hoa Lu Ninh Binh
As the first imperial capital of Vietnam, Hoa Lu holds a rich history that spanned 42 years. This site witnessed the resilient nation-building and defense efforts during the Dinh Dynasty (968 – 980), the Tien Le Dynasty (980 – 1009), and the early Ly Dynasty (1009 – 1010).
Surrounded by overlapping hills, the area’s natural defenses were complemented by the winding Hoang Long River and extensive moats, establishing its military significance. In 968, Dinh Bo Linh triumphed over twelve warlords here, ascended the throne, and founded the Dai Co Viet nation, making Hoa Lu Vietnam’s political heart.
Under King Ly Thai To, the capital relocated to Thang Long Imperial Citadel due to the limitations of Hoa Lu in terms of space and strategic positioning. While the royal court moved, many architectural influences and systems were inherited from Hoa Lu, which preserved its legacy through temples, pagodas, and shrines that stand to this day.

Visiting Hoa Lu Ancient Capital transports you back in time. Where serene landscapes and echoes of history create a nostalgic ambiance. Amidst ancient walls and ramparts, the grandeur of this once-magnificent imperial capital remains palpable.
Covering over 300 hectares. Hoa Lu is a complex of historical relics that includes citadel walls, caves, temples, and significant tombs. The site is divided into three main zones:
1. Special Protection Zone
This zone encompasses the area within the Hoa Lu citadel. Houses key relics such as the temples dedicated to King Le Dai Hanh, King Dinh Tien Hoang, Princess Phat Kim, and Nhat Tru Pagoda. Additionally, it includes remnants of the ancient citadel walls and underground palaces.
2. Buffer Zone
This area features the picturesque landscape along both sides of the Sao Khe River and the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, showcasing a variety of temples, caves, and historical sites.
3. Related Relics

Notable Architectural Works in Hoa Lu Ninh Binh
1. King Dinh Tien Hoang’s Temple
The Temple of King Dinh Tien Hoang has a history of over a thousand years. It is one of the most notable relics in Hoa Lu. The temple is located in Truong Yen commune. It offers a scenic view of Ma Yen Mountain, where the king rests.
Initiated during the Ly Dynasty, the temple has a unique construction style. It has been preserved and restored over the years.
The complex includes grand structures like the Ngo Mon Gate, artificial mountains, lotus ponds, and worship halls. Noteworthy artifacts include intricate stone carvings and elegant wooden pillars. These showcase the skill of 17th-century artisans.
2. King Le’s Temple
About 500 meters from King Dinh’s temple lies the smaller King Le Dai Hanh’s temple. This structure features three buildings that honor Pham Cu Luong, a pivotal figure who aided Le Hoan in ascending the throne. The temple’s central area is dedicated to King Le Dai Hanh, with adjoining spaces for his son and queen. Remnants of intricate carvings and ancient pottery can still be found here, housed in a museum adjacent to the temple.
3. Temple of Princess Phat Kim
Adjacent to the temple of King Le Dai Hanh and Nhat Tru Pagoda, the Temple of Princess Phat Kim honors the daughter of King Dinh Tien Hoang. It commemorates her strength and resilience during tumultuous times in the 10th century.
