Dau Go Cave – Ha Long Bay Best Cave

Dau Go Cave, one of the most stunning caves in Halong Bay, is located on Dau Go Island, approximately 6 km from Bai Chay Harbour and only 300 meters from Thien Cung Cave. The cave showcases ancient, unspoiled beauty with unique stalagmites in various fascinating shapes.

Situated 27 meters above sea level, the cave entrance measures 12 meters wide and 17 meters high, with a dome height of 25 meters. Inside, the cave offers a vast space of 5000 square meters, divided into three chambers. The first chamber is bathed in natural light, revealing an array of stalactites in different sizes and colors. Visitors can use their imagination to see shapes resembling elephants, deer, lions, and turtles.

As you move deeper into the second chamber, the atmosphere transforms, evoking the feeling of standing inside an ancient castle with its majestic architecture. The deeper sections of the cave are dimly lit. Creating a mysterious and enchanting ambiance with natural formations appearing like novel paintings. The cave culminates in a grand area with massive stone columns, illuminated by colorful electric lights.

Distinct from other caves in the bay, Dau Go Cave boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The expansive entrance, high humidity, and sunlight have fostered the growth of a variety of plants, including moss, ferns, and woody species

Legend of Dau Go Cave, Quang Ninh

The name “Dau Go Cave” is steeped in mystery and associated with several fascinating legends. Generations have passed down three primary stories to explain the origin of its name

– The First Legend: During the 13th century, in the war against the Mongol army, Commander Tran Hung Dao ordered the planting of wooden stakes to destroy enemy boats. This strategic move led to a significant victory, safeguarding the nation’s borders. Over time, many wooden stakes remained in the cave, leading locals to name it “Dau Go Cave,” a mispronunciation of “hide wood.”

– The Second Legend: Locals say that bow-shaped islands once stood before Cave, offering refuge to fishermen during storms. While repairing their boats, fishermen would leave behind pieces of wood, which contributed to the cave’s name.

– The Third Legend: Another explanation suggests that from a distance, Dau Go Island resembles a large log with two holes at either end for threading a rope. This distinctive feature inspired the name “Dau Go Cave.”

While the true origin of the cave’s name remains uncertain, these legends enhance its allure and draw tourists from around the world. In 1938, the French travel magazine Merveille de Monde featured an article on Dau Go Cave, referring to it as “Grotte des Merveilles” (Cave of Wonders), further affirming its majestic beauty.
